Decentraland is a virtual world where you can build and explore 3D creations, play games and socialize.
The decentraland experiences are currently being built by thousands of LAND owners. Once they are ready, you will be able to explore the world on your computer, phone or VR headset.
Problems & Solutions
The development of large proprietary platforms, such as Facebook, has allowed hundreds of millions of users to gather, interact, share content, and play games. Their network effects helped cultivate vast online communities and gaming companies. These platforms, controlled by centralized organizations, manage the network’s rules and content flow, while extracting significant revenue from the communities and content creators who drive traffic to the platforms. Decentraland aims to establish a network that allows its content creators to own and capture the full value of their contributions.
Decentraland provides an infrastructure to support a shared virtual world, also known as a metaverse. It consists of a decentralized ledger for land ownership, a protocol for describing the content of each land parcel, and a peer-to-peer network for user interactions.
Features & Highlights
Applications: The Decentraland scripting language will allow the development of applications, games, gambling, and dynamic 3D scenes. This scripting language will be designed to handle a wide range of capabilities, including creating objects, loading textures, handling physics, encoding user interactions, sounds, payments, and external calls, among others.
Content Curation: Users in Decentraland will gather around neighborhoods of shared interest. Being located near high-traffic hubs will drive users to the landowners’ content.
Advertising: Brands may advertise using billboards near, or in, high-traffic land parcels to promote their products, services, and events. Some neighborhoods may become virtual versions of Times Square in New York City. Additionally, brands may position products and create shared experiences to engage with their audience.
Digital Collectibles: The team expects users to publish, distribute, and collect rare digital assets issued on the blockchain by their creators. Just as it occurs today in other virtual worlds or through online forums, these digital assets will be traded inside this world through the scripting system and be backed by the aforementioned naming system.
Social: Groups that currently gather in online forums, chat groups, or even other centralized multiplayer games could port their communities into Decentraland. Offline communities could also find in Decentraland a space to gather.
Token Sale & Economics
Token Utility & Use Cases
MANA is Decentraland’s fungible, ERC20 cryptocurrency token. MANA tokens will be used to purchase land, goods, and services in-world. MANA tokens will also be used to incentivize content creation and user adoption, therefore bootstrapping the first decentralized virtual world.
Esteban Ordano, Tech Lead. A seasoned blockchain engineer, Esteban co-founded Zeppelin Solutions and led the team that created Streamium, the first app that implemented payment channels, a crucial technology for scaling blockchain payments. As a former software engineer at BitPay, he co-created one of the leading Bitcoin infrastructure libraries, known as Bitcore. He was also on the teams behind Copay (a bitcoin wallet) and Insight (a bitcoin blockchain API).
Ariel Meilich, Project Lead. With experience in venture capital and data analytics, Ariel has worked as an Analyst at Charles River Ventures, a leading Silicon Valley venture fund, and as the founder of Benchrise, a big-data company whose product helped find software engineers for tech companies. Before entering the world of tech, he spent two years as a National Institute of Health fellow, performing neuroscience research on human decision-making, while running a BPO agency that catered to clients such as Amazon and General Electric.
Manuel Araoz, Board Member. With an established reputation in crypto, Manuel is the co-founder and CTO at Zeppelin Solutions, the leader in smart contract security. Using their audited smart contracts, over $250 million has been raised by organizations such as Brave, Golem, and Blockchain Capital. Manuel is known as the creator of Proof of Existence, the first non-financial application on the blockchain. He also served as a Tech Lead at Bitpay, Copay, and Insight. In his spare time, Manuel has created several games, such as Galaktia and 7cerebros, a problem-solving competition for college students. Along with other core Decentraland team members, he co-founded Voltaire, a blockchain-focused hacker space in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Yemel Jardi, Board Member. A veteran blockchain developer, Yemel worked on ChangeTip building a micropayment infrastructure for the web, before it was acquired by Airbnb in 2016. Before that, he was a Software Engineer at BitPay (the leading Bitcoin payment processor) where he crafted some of the most widely used open source tools utilized by Bitcoin developers worldwide, such as the Bitcore library. Yemel is also a Professor of Cryptocurrencies at the Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires, and Chairman of the South American Business Forum. He was one of the founding members of Voltaire, a blockchain-focused hacker space in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Aragon - The Aragon project is a community with the mission to empower freedom by creating tools for decentralized organizations to thrive. Aragon empowers you to freely organize and collaborate without borders or intermediaries. Create global, bureaucracy-free organizations, companies, and communities.
District0x - A network of decentralized markets and communities. Create, operate, and govern. Powered by Ethereum, Aragon, and IPFS. Districts are marketplaces and communities that exist as decentralized autonomous organizations on the district0x Network. All internet citizens will be able to deploy districts to the network free of charge, forever.
